Do you want to be a certified court interpreter?

Have you ever wondered what makes a good court interpreter, or if court interpreting is the career for you?

If so, you should attend the November 8th Orientation to Court Interpreting. The orientation will help provide answers to those questions, and by attending you will:

  • Fulfill one required step towards gaining OJD Court Interpreter Certification.
  • Become familiar with the skills and abilities necessary to interpret in court and court interpreter ethics.
  • Learn about the criminal, civil and juvenile court processes, and get a judge's perspective on court interpreters.

November 8th  Orientation to Court Interpreting Program

The November Orientation will be presented over a period of three weeks (October 20-November 7th). The first three weeks will consist of online activities (not live sessions) that registrants will need to complete prior to the live, virtual session on November 8th. The third week will include the live, online session on November 8th. In order to successfully complete orientation, registrants will need to complete all three online activities and be prepared to discuss them during the in-person session.

Fees

Oregon Resident Nonrefundable Orientation Fee: $100.00
Non-Residents: $150.00

Language Assessments

As part of the Orientation process, candidates will be asked to participate in a language assessment for both English and the non-English language. These assessments are designed to measure a candidate's level of bilingualism in both languages. During the assessment, the candidate will have a conversation with an evaluator over the phone about a variety of topics. The assessments are not interpreting exams, and the result has no effect on the candidate's ability to participate in the court interpreter certification process. The result rather gives the candidate an idea of their level bilingualism, and to give them an idea of where the candidate may want to focus their study efforts in the future.

The assessments will be provided at no cost to the candidate. Candidates will be responsible for scheduling both the English and non-English assessments through CLAS. The assessments are taken over the phone and take 20-30 minutes each. The assessments are scheduled on a date and time of the candidate's choosing. More information on scheduling procedures will be provided upon receipt of registration.
