How to become a Custody Parenting Plan Mediator

What custody and parenting plan mediation services do courts offer?

Because of ORS 107.755, every judicial district in Oregon must offer orientation and mediation when parents have disputes over child custody, parenting time, or visitation. These services are funded by pass through funds from the Oregon Judicial Department to counties, as well as county marriage license and domestic partnership registration fees.

What payment models do courts and counties use for family law mediators?

Courts and counties work together to provide family law mediation services using several models:
  • Most counties contract with mediators, paying them per hour, case, or session.
  • Five counties employ mediators directly.
  • One county contracts with a nonprofit agency that employs a mediator.
There is no statewide application or approval process. Each local court or county has its own application process. Please contact the court directly to learn more about its process.
