Volunteer Opportunities

  • Mediators
The court is seeking volunteers to serve as mediators in small claims and landlord, tenant eviction cases. Volunteers work with disputing parties to help them work out an acceptable resolution, avoiding the necessity of a court trial. The time commitment is flexible and can be scheduled in two hour increments.

The rewards for volunteering can be great. Volunteers learn basic information about how the court system works, including the small claims and landlord, tenant eviction processes. They have a chance to practice skills learned in mediation training under the supervision and direction of an experienced mediator. Finally, they experience the magic of bringing seemingly divergent parties together to a more peaceful and appropriate resolution.

A basic mediation training course is required before it is possible to volunteer. For more information about becoming a volunteer, call 503.588.5368.
  • Lawyers
The court is seeking lawyers to provide pro bono legal assistance to low income litigants in family law matters. Low-income litigants can access court forms and instructions for processing routine family law matters through the court's facilitation program. Those who have more complicated issues and need advice concerning the use of the forms are referred to a volunteer lawyer for a half hour consultation.

The program is operated in cooperation with Marion-Polk Legal Aid Service. Litigants must meet legal aid income guidelines to be eligible for the service.

Attorneys who volunteer at least 40 hours through this program and/or Marion-Polk Legal Aid's Volunteer Lawyer Program, are eligible to receive a certificate for a free CLE or publication offered through the Oregon State Bar.
