The Honorable David Schuman has been a Judge of the Oregon Court of Appeals since 2001. Before joining the Court of Appeals, he
taught college English before attending law school (1968 - 1981)
clerked for now-retired Oregon Supreme Court Justice Hans Linde (1984 - 1985)
practiced law in the Oregon Department of Justice as Assistant Attorney General in the Appellate Division (1985 - 1987) and as Deputy Attorney General (1997 - 2001)
taught law at the University of Oregon School of Law (1987 - 1997 and 2001), where he also served as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (1994 - 1996)
While teaching law, Judge Schuman received the Ersted Award for Distinguished Teaching and published scholarly articles in the Oregon Law Review, Michigan Law Review, Vermont Law Review, American Criminal Law Review, Temple Law Review, and many other journals, as well as articles in The Washington Post, The Oregonian, The Chronicle of Higher Education and other periodicals.
Born and raised in Glencoe, Illinois, Judge Schuman graduated from New Trier High School, (1962), Stanford University (B.A. 1966), San Francisco State University (M.A. 1968), University of Chicago (Ph. D., English Literature, 1974), University of Oregon School of Law (J.D. 1984).
