The Honorable Lynn R. Nakamoto

The Honorable Lynn Nakamoto was appointed in January 2011 to the Oregon Court of Appeals by Governor Kulongoski.  Before joining the Court of Appeals, she was

  • an associate, shareholder, and managing shareholder of Portland law firm Markowitz, Herbold, Glade & Mehlhaf, P.C., where she had a business and employment litigation practice in both trial work and appeals (1989-2010)
  • a summer clerk for United States District Judge Helen J. Frye (1989)
  • a staff attorney and acting executive director of Marion-Polk Legal Aid Service in Salem representing indigent clients in civil matters (1987-1989)
  • a staff attorney for Bronx Legal Services in New York City representing indigent clients in civil matters (1985-1987)

Judge Nakamoto was a member (1998-2000) and vice chair of the Oregon Board of Bar Examiners (2000-2001) and a member (1992-95, 2004-2006) and chair (2006) of the Oregon State Bar Affirmative Action Committee.  She also was active in other local and statewide bar associations and served on the boards of a number of community organizations.  She has written frequently on discovery practice and as of January 2011 serves on the board of the Oregon Law Institute.

Judge Nakamoto was born in Los Angeles and grew up in southern California.  She received an A.B. in philosophy with honors from Wellesley College (1982) and attended the University of California at Berkeley (1980-81) and New York University School of Law (J.D. 1985).
